Seashore Life of the Northern Pacific Coast: An Illustrated Guide to Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (June, 2003)
Author: Eugene N. Kozloff
Average review score:

Not for you if you just want to know "what is this?"
This book is really geared more toward the academic. I would not find it useful as a field guide, though it makes for fairly interesting biological reading. It is not laid out in a "field guide" fashion, with species listed and illustrations for each provided. It would be frustrating to take the kids to the beach at low tide and attempt to use this unless you are very well acquainted with your marine taxonomy. Most species are not identified by a common name, and the color plates and illustrations are not necessarily near the species text.
This book reads as a textbook for students rather than a useful tool for laymen who just need to know what critter they just found under a rock, and want the information before the tide comes back in.

A great guide for someone who wants to see for themselves
Though published in the early 1980s, this book does a wonderful job of introducing the active naturalist to the nearshore marine life of the Pacific Northwest. This book includes good illustrations and photographs, descriptions of where marine flora and fauna live and what they do there. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go the seashore of the Pacific Northwest and figure out what they are looking at. Kozloff has been there and seen everything he's writing about. I use this book as my primary text when I take students to Puget Sound, Washington, for my marine ecology field course. A top notch field guide!

A beautifully written page-turner
Packed with atomsphere (life of American's living in Colombia), characters, tensions and romance, this is a book I couldn't put down until I finished it at three in the morning. A real tour de force and one I would recommend to anyone looking for fiction with substance and fascination fascination.

The Bonneville Dream
Published in Paperback by Binford & Mort Pub (May, 2001)
Authors: Lorena S. Fisher and Binford & Mort Publishing
Average review score:

Wonderful story about real people who built the dam.
This is a great short story of the history of the people that helped design and build Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. There is a lot of history and a lot gossip, but both are facinating. For those of us who know about and appreciate the dam, this book is a must read.

British Columbia's Gulf Islands: Afoot & Afloat
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Marge Mueller and Ted Mueller
Average review score:

Afoot & Afloat: an ambitious undertaking
This book is well organized with numerous non-nautical maps and helpful tables. The writing style is concise and easily readible. It is somewhat of an overview publication in that it does not contain the detail frequently provided in a cruising guide nor does it include very much content which is not oriented to the coastlines of the islands. As priced it certainly provides much more in value than one would expect.

If your interest is in using this as a cruising guide, you can expect some frustration by the obvious omissions of helpful information. An example would be the reference to Brentwood Bay where it is noted that there are three marinas which provide guest moorings, but they are neither identified in the content or by name on any maps. Thus, a sailor seeking an overnight mooring has no identification for calling the harbormaster.

The authors have not suggested any restaurants or lodging accomodations except for a few places. They have, however, provided a great deal of information about the parks and the facilities available in the parks for the area covered and have likewise included comprehensive information on the use of the ferry systems for gaining access to the islands.

In summary this publication covers a great deal of worthwhile and helpful information for anyone interested in visiting or considering a visit to the Gulf Islands.

British Columbia: A History
Published in Hardcover by MacMillan Pub Co (June, 1971)
Author: Margaret Anchoretta Ormsby
Average review score:

A strong taridtional history of British Columbia
This book by Ormsby, one of the pre-eminent historians of British Columbia in her day, serves as good general history of the province. Published in 1958 in honour of the provinces centenary celebrations, B.C.: A History is your typical narrative account. Ormsby starts off in the 18th century and proceeds to slowly take the reader up to the present day. Like most Historians of this era, Ormsby betrays a strong preference for the events of the colonial, pre-confederation British Columbia. A lot of time is spent detailing the effects that resource extraction (such as mining or the fur trade had on the development of the province), as well, Ormsby is a strong "traditionalist" in that she prefers to focus on the lives of great men (usually politicians or administrators) to highlight her narrative.

In the end it is nevertheless an excellent account of British Columbia, especially in the 19th century, and may still hold some insights 42 years after it was published.

Bugaboo Rock: A Climber's Guide
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (May, 1990)
Authors: Randall Green and Joe Bensen
Average review score:

One and only guide book to the Bugaboos with topos.
For anyone going to the Bugaboos to climb, this book is a necessity: it is the only source of information on routes in the area, with detailed topos.

Cons: some topos are incorrect (ex: Tiger's Trail). Also, new routes have gone up since 1990.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal: A Guide to Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Maryland, District of Columbia, and West Virginia (024-005-01076-9)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by US Government Printing Office (1991)
Authors: S/N 024-005-01076-9 and U S National Parks
Average review score:

Beautiful little book!
This guide to the entire 184 mile C&O canal is wonderful, with nice cutaway illustrations of locks, boats, the gatekeeper's house; well-written accounts and vintage photos of life on barge boats, current information on the park's amenities. It's small enough to be portable. Very useful and enjoyable guide. I would have liked more information on the possibility of canoeing the entire length of the river, thus my 4 star rating. A great little book, and quite affordable.

The Columbia Anthology of Gay Literature
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (15 June, 2001)
Author: Byrne R. S. Fone
Average review score:

recommendable book
This is a readable and interesting book not only for westerner but also for us Japanese. However I would like to read much more on Greek and Latin literatures. And next time more comprehensive volume including Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Persian and Arabic anthologies I hope to read.

In addition, the editor didn't understand the Greek language well, since he erroneously thought that " Amores " of Lucianos(p.23-24) is different work from " Affairs of the Heart " of (Pseudo)Lucianos(p.49-).
